When this project was assigned, I was honestly pretty stumped. I don't think of myself as a particularly creative person or anything like that. The idea to use photography came to me just looking at lists in class. Most of the ideas for creative fields that were thrown around in class didn't interest me. Photography only interested me because you see people taking pictures every where now and I figured it could be cool to see where the field started. I also wanted to see how long photography has been around as well as why it is so popular now.
The picture above is an example of an early 1800's camera.
The idea of photography started as early as the 4th and 5th century BC. Chinese philosopher Mo Ti and Aristotle have notes depicting a very simplified version of a modern camera. While the idea had been around for so long the actual field started in the 1800's. Thomas Wedgewood made the first known attempt at making a camera and keeping the images in the year 1800. His attempt could hardly be described as successful. While he did manage to capture an image with his camera the image was the shadows of the objects he was trying to capture. There wasn't much growth in the field until 1816. Nicéphore Niépce tried to make a way to capture a photo. He was successful in capturing the image, but the photos produced were negatives. Which means the darkest parts of the photos were the lightest in the intended image. In 1826 Nicéphore Niépce found a way to make the images into positives. He discovered that leaving the negatives out for a certain amount of time (Usually days) could make the images correct. The field began to slowly grow in popularity and functionality. In 1851 contests began coming out where the best picture would win a gold medal and prizes. The market didn't begin to appeal to the masses until the 1900's with Kodak coming to prominence. In 1901 Kodak came out with the first camera that the mass market could use. Camera's were mostly captured black and white images until 1936. In 1936 Kodak made a camera that could capture red, blue, and green. In the 1950's full color images were captured. Photography's popularity took off when the first image was placed on the internet in 1992. Suddenly anyone could have their images seen by masses.
