Duff Goldman has been cooking since he was 4 years
old. He started working professionally at the age of 14 in a local bagel shop.
Ever since then he has put his own creative spin on everything he has done. It
is said that his creativity comes from being raised in a family of great cooks.
Aside from being a well-known, pretty much amazing baker, he is a sculptor,
graffiti artist, musician, and artist. He is also in a band called “So I Had
To?” Below is a picture of Duff with some of his creations. He is very proud of what he does, and he takes a lot of joy in bringing smiles and shocking reactions to things he can create in the kitchen.
In 2000, he moved to Baltimore and started to make cakes for his friends
and family for certain occasions. His creative works were so fascinating and
word traveled fast. In 2002, he decided to make cake baking his full time job.
In 2005 he bought a 6000 square foot cake compound in Baltimore. Something different
about Duff and his co-bakers is that he hires people with all kinds of
backgrounds: from architecture, performance are, graphic design, sculpture, and
massage therapy. This makes sense though because he needs creative minds around
him to enhance and build on his own creativity.
These are some of the cake recipes and mixes that can be bought at some grocery stores. He enjoys being creative and loves to make the simplest thing, like cake, fun and good looking, while also making them absolutely delicious.
According to the Cooking
Chanel, “Duff’s teams takes cake design to the next level, motivated by the
need to constantly outdo themselves by baking cakes that are beautiful,
challenging and as out-of-the-ordinary as possible. His business is called
Charm City, and it has grown to become one of the most popular cake shops in
the nation. There are currently orders that are two years out.
While
there is no exact science or process Duff follows to be creative, to me at
least, he is a good definition of creativity. He is given an idea or sees
something, and is able to transform it into a cake. For example, for a party
with the cast members of Lost (a TV show), he made a very intricate and detailed
cake that summed up Lost. In a cake! It’s just amazing. Much like some of the
writers we read about, he just saw an idea (a word for the writers) and was
able to transform it into something with much more substance and detail.
